Recognizing Indigenous Peoples' Day

Dear RPS Community,

As we recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day on Monday, October 12, I want to take a moment to honor the histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous peoples, both past and present.

Here in Revere, we live and learn on land with deep historical ties to the Massachusett people, whose presence and connection to this region extend back thousands of years. Indigenous Peoples' Day offers us an opportunity to acknowledge that history, recognize the resilience of Native communities, and celebrate the many ways Indigenous peoples continue to enrich our society.

As educators, we have a responsibility to ensure our students develop an understanding and appreciation of the diverse histories, cultures, and perspectives that have shaped our communities and our nation. This includes recognizing that Indigenous history is not simply a part of our past, but a living history reflected in the voices, experiences, and contributions of Indigenous peoples today.

At Revere Public Schools, we believe that learning about one another helps us build a stronger, more inclusive school community. By encouraging curiosity, fostering meaningful conversations, and ensuring that all histories and identities are respected, we help our students develop the empathy and understanding needed to become thoughtful, engaged citizens.

Indigenous Peoples' Day reminds us that there is always more to learn from one another and that honoring our differences is an important part of recognizing our shared humanity.

I encourage our students, families, educators, and staff to take time to reflect on the significance of this day, explore the rich histories and cultures of Indigenous peoples, and consider how we can continue to promote respect, understanding, and belonging in our schools and beyond.

Let us continue to listen, learn, and honor the stories and contributions of all people who make up our community.

Sincerely,

Dr. Lourenço Garcia
Assistant Superintendent of Equity and Inclusion
